While we were with Pat, we felt less like tourists and more like visitors being taken around by a friend (one who is professional and organized!). It seems like she personally knew everyone in Orkney -- she was welcomed warmly and chatted with all of the owners and staff everywhere we went, so we felt very welcomed and also it was apparent how valued Pat is in the community. We ate lunch at lovely places off the beaten path and felt like we truly had a taste of a local experience. Because Pat knew when certain cruise liners and bus tours were going to be in, she strategically planned our itinerary so that we were able to visit many of the major historic sites without having to deal with big crowds. We had no difficulty getting in to see the more popular sites, like Maeshowe and Skara Brae.
We enjoyed talking with Pat about all aspects of life on the islands, both ancient and modern day. Her enthusiasm for Orkney people, culture and history is pervasive and contagious. After our trip, Pat even followed up with additional links and information on the Ness of Brodgar digs. We couldn't have had a more knowledgable and pleasant guide for our visit to Orkney and can't recommend Pat enough!
